Welcome to the August 2007 issue of Dulcimer Sessions®!
The Mel Bay family of dulcimer books contains outstanding resources for a wide variety of music styles. You'll see what I mean when you visit www.baysidepress.com then click on Dulcimer in the left margin. That takes you to the Main dulcimer page. Click on Hammered Dulcimer or Mountain Dulcimer and check out the "All" line for a delightful browse!
The following pieces from two Mel Bay books present some lovely music from different cultures that are beautiful and new for both dulcimers:
- "The Morning Song" from Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite, arranged for mountain dulcimer by Lorinda Jones. This lovely piece can be found in Lorinda's Mel Bay book, Lullabies and Other Lilting Melodies for Dulcimer.
- The Mexican folk song, "Cielito Lindo," arranged by Bonnie Carol. This is from her Mel Bay book, La Musica, which features lots of Latin American music arranged for hammered and mountain dulcimers.
Our guest authors, Terry Lewis and Marya Katz have written the following articles:
- Playing the Mountain Dulcimer Across the Strings in the First Position, by Terry Lewis. Includes two tablatures and three sound files of the old-time fiddle tune, "Whiskey Before Breakfast."
- Marya Katz is a talented hammered dulcimer player-composer. "La Luna Giubilante" is one of her pieces, arranged here as A Duet for Hammered Dulcimer. She includes playing instructions and a sound file!
