Welcome to Dulcimer Sessions! - December 2005

A Bimonthly Webzine

This issue contains lots of musical "presents" to help you celebrate the Holiday Season!

1. Ken Kolodner's article on "Arranging Christmas Music on the Hammered Dulcimer" begins with the basic melody of "In the Bleak Midwinter," then adds an arpeggio harmony, and after that offers many options for varying the music. Great steps in creativity and musical beauty. Includes sound file!

Hammered dulcimer players, you'll enjoy five more holiday pieces found in the following mountain dulcimer articles. They are presented in sound files and standard musical notation with chords.

2. Lance Frodsham's mountain dulcimer article entitled "Capos for Christmas" offers some wonderful music in DAD tuning using a capo. It begins with an easy arrangement of the French noel "Patapan." Then Lance shows how he plays fiddler Kevin Burke's setting of the Irish reel "Christmas Eve." Includes sound files!

3. Celebrate Jewish holiday traditions with Joellen Lapidus's article on "Chanukah Music for Mountain Dulcimer." You'll find some interesting history plus the songs "The Dreydl Song" and "S'Vivon." Includes sound files!

4. Steve Eulberg's article on "Minor Modes & Christmas Music for Mountain Dulcimer" explains how they work and presents his dulcimer arrangement of the Canadian Christmas carol, "'Twas in the Moon of Wintertime," good for intermediate mountain dulcimer players. Includes sound file with both mountain and hammered dulcimers!

We also welcome requests for new subjects from visitors to this webzine. I hope these articles give the reader interesting information about the instruments, how they are played, their music, and the spirit of the people who play them.
