Welcome to the June 2007 issue of Dulcimer Sessions®!

The Mel Bay family of dulcimer books contains outstanding resources for a wide variety of music styles. You'll see what I mean when you visit www.baysidepress.com then click on Dulcimer in the left margin. That takes you to the Main dulcimer page. Click on Hammered Dulcimer or Mountain Dulcimer and check out the "All" line for a delightful browse!

The following pieces from two outstanding Mel Bay collections present music from U.S. history in observance of Independence Day:

  1. "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" from the book Favorite Old-Time American Songs for Dulcimer by Mark Kailana Nelson. The piece has mountain dulcimer tablature and notation that can be used for hammered dulcimer.
  2. "Gary Owen" from The Hammered Dulcimer Treasury of Tunes by Sally Hawley.
Also in this issue are two excellent articles with music:
  1. Leo Kretzner on Rhythm (Part 1). Leo is a great mountain dulcimer player, guitarist, and a drummer. This article contains some very helpful and enjoyable rhythm patterns to try for hand coordination, whether you play Mountain or Hammered dulcimer!
  2. "Durme" for hammered dulcimer by Karen Ashbrook. This is a lovely traditional Sephardic (Iberian Jewish) piece, complete with sound file and playing instructions for hammered dulcimer players.

Many thanks to our June issue authors. I invite hammered and mountain dulcimer players to submit articles to me for possible inclusion in a future DulcimerSessions.com. We also welcome requests for new subjects from visitors to this website.

For more great music for mountain and hammered dulcimers from Mel Bay, make sure to visit: www.baysidepress.com

Don't forget to view previous articles in Back Issues.

Enjoy! See you in our August 1, 2007 issue.
