Tribute to David Schnaufer

by Lois Hornbostel

One of our most talented and dedicated mountain dulcimer innovators, David Schnaufer, passed away August 23. He reintroduced country music to this instrument from its early roots, but was equally skilled at playing many other music styles on the mountain dulcimer. We will miss him and celebrate the rich legacy of recorded music, playing innovations, and teaching David gave to us and our instrument.

When I traveled to my first dulcimer "convention" at Cosby, TN, in 1976, David was one of the first friends I made. The following article is one he gave me for my 1981 Mel Bay book, Anthology for the Fretted Dulcimer. It contains his arrangement of the fiddle tune "Texas Quickstep," tips on playing it, and an early bio and photo of David.
